Matthew Locke (1621-1677)

The Flat Consort for My Cousin Kemble

Suite No. 1 in C Minor

Arr. and Performed by Patchworks.dk

The Flat Consort is a suite for viola da gamba trio written during the Purcell era. Locke was a close friend of Henry Purcell and was organist and composer for the court of Charles II. He is often credited with being Purcell's mentor.  We arranged this suite for recorder trio and attempted in this performance to highlight the radical tempo changes and boisterous counterpoint typical of the post-Elizabethan masking style.  The mask was a type of incidental music written for plays and as such involves dramatic shifts in tempo and character made to reflect what is happening on stage.
